Are you also rebellious?

In Chicago, it’s officially time to sleep with a blanket and layer my outfits. My friend Zoey described Fall/Winter as “dark mode season”. I live for all things dark mode (apps, website, fashion) except for weather.

As an island gyal, I need my weather to be bright, warm–nay, hot-ta-ta-tot. If I ain’t sweating, I’m cold.

Today I got a prayer plant from my friend Heather. Now I have 4 plants to care for during dark mode season. I think odds are in my favor because now I finally have a sun lamp. I think that’s what it’s called.

I interviewed Heather and the Food Not Bombs plant hospital for a video news segment for Rebellious Magazine.

“I think being a caretaker, surrounding oneself with living beings, be they plants or what have you, pushes back on that idea of consumerism and collection of future garbage, which is most of the things that we purchase,” says Heather.

Do you live where it gets cold? What are you doing to survive dark mode season?

Speaking of rejecting consumerism, this year I embarked on a no-buy journey. I’ve managed to not to buy anything or pay a bill for 43 of 65 days Since falling off the wagon / falling into a daily spending habit.

Here’s a piece I wrote for Rebellious about finishing my no-buy year strong.

Hope you are doing well and making time to care for yourself in ways that don’t require spending money.
