Clearing my idea debt and going into the Spider-verse

Hey Friends,

It’s me, Onicia —writer, comedian, human searching for her next adventure.

Since we last spoke, I gave up working on my screenplay, Hey, Miss Trudy, to focus on something smaller. I’d just spent 3 years writing a feature film and animating a 5-episode web series.

Last month, I went to Las Locas Comedy at The Laugh Factory and thought it might be a good idea to dip my toe in the stand-up comedy waters. However, before I could get back on stage, I needed to write new material. And to do that, I needed to clear up some Idea Debt.

Idea Debt is the accumulated mental burden of all the ideas and unfinished projects you’ve already emotionally invested in, and that you’re planning to get to someday, somehow, once you figure out how to fit them in. (JessicaAbel.com)

Since 2016-ish, I started e-mailing myself joke ideas. Well, that folder had over 290 emails. Friends, that was 290 joke ideas I’d been sitting on for almost 10 years!

Beloved, going through those 290+ e-mails was an experience. I cringed. I died. But, most importantly, I laughed. Yes, I am actually funny. Some of those joke ideas still have legs. It took about a week to sort through the emails and put the usable ideas into my digital notebook.

The next step is to apply my humor writing skills and create a new set. I was thinking about live streaming my writing process but it’s been kind of tricky with my day job, family visits, the World Cup, and summer plans. Also, it’s been nice not waking up at 4am. But, I will if that’s the only way to find time to write. So, I guess, subscribe to my YouTube channel if you want to see how the comedy sausage is made.

In other news, I made a Spider-Man cake for my roommate. Shout out to JujuBox Cakeshop for helping to rescue this cake fail.

Before: Spider-Man looking like he smoked crack rocks.
After: Hey, good looking!

As you know, I love ice cream and all things sweet. Sadly, my clothes stopped fitting and the scale confirmed that your girl was getting out of control. A month ago, I started a 100-day fitness journey.

  • Only eat complete meals. No snacking or eating your roommate’s scraps.
  • Get minimum 30 minutes of physical activity (usually walking) per day. I’ve since increased this to 60 minutes. I feel like upping it to 90 minutes, but I don’t want to burn out.

So far, I’ve lost 10 lbs. Crazy! My goal is to focus on changing my lifestyle vs doing a crash diet or extreme exercise. The 100-day journey should end just in time for me to enjoy all the delicious Halloween treats. Hopefully, I will continue to eat in moderation.

Have you all seen The Polygamist (Netflix)? Friends, this show is so good. And I think it’s even better because I’m not binging. Yes, I’m watching 1 episode a day during my workout. I’m on episode 14. So, let’s chat about it but please, no spoilers.

Anyway, that’s all I have to say for now. Hope you are enjoying your summer. Be kind to yourself and make time to play!
