Rest in Piss Devin Damuels, a Black romantic comedy by Onicia Muller

My Romcom is Political

On the web page for Rest in Piss, Devin Damuels, I describe the project as a blackity Black romantic with “no woke terminology”. I assure you it’s not because this screenplay is palatable for mass consumption or “a-political”. RIPDD is very feminist, radical, and political.

In a world where the modern romantic comedy film usually features beautiful, slim or fit, wealthy, able-bodied lovers, it is a radical political act for me to dream of a fat, Black female who loves herself, has no problem getting good sex, and have men who the world deems as “high-value” desperate to be chosen by her.

That was a mouthful.

Every week, I consider putting the project on pause and doing something else with my time. Go in the streets to protest and comfort the disenfranchised.

When my girlfriends claim their lack of “feminine energy” causes singleness or attracts “beta males”, I’m reminded that we need media and stories to combat all the foolish red pill, tradwife, femininity bullshit that’s being popularized now. These theories and ideologies lead people to vote against their interests and fall down a path that builds up a society that is ableist, classist, racists, and sexist.

In this war against bad thinking and politics, no dense academic text will win. People don’t want to read. People are too stressed to sit and look up a bunch of definitions.

I wrote Rest In Piss, Devin Damuels because it’s easier to show people what healthy love looks like versus breaking down toxic relationship dynamics with verbose definitions.

With one book and two movies, Steve Harvey poisoned generations of women into believing they needed to think like misogynistic men while acting like a tradwife in order to be worthy of love. Kevin Samuels buildt on that and taught that youth and unrealistic beauty standards were the only things that made a woman worthy of a man. Correction, worthy of a man who made over 6 figures.

Like, just even trying to parse out this information in an easy to digest essay is too much. It’s boring. The people who need to hear this message ain’t gonna read alla dis.

TLDR; I’m using (romantic) comedy to achieve world domination increase empathy and understanding.

Romcom Table Read Update

The past week, I interviewed some directors for the table read. Wow, so much amazing talent. I honestly can’t believe that people with such illustrious resumes would even consider my little project.

Lesson: If you have an idea, shoot your shot in the DMs because you never know who else thinks you’re dope.

Of course, as an Internet friend, I’m more than happy to review your pitches and cheer you on. Just shoot me an email.

YouTube Monetization Journey

Surprisingly, with less than 10 views, someone found my ‘Minute on Racism’ video and initiated a little back and forth. Their comments reminded me that popularity on YouTube (or any online space) comes with engaging with Internet strangers.

Not everyone is going to love you. Many days, it will feel like the majority of people don’t. That’s a big reason for why my blog comments are closed and I invite you, friends, to respond via email.

Every year since 2016, I determine this is the year of monetization and upload consistently for about 3 months. Then I grow tired of crickets and spam. I get spooked by negative comments. (Oh yeah, Devin and I get our fair share of negative comments because of #Scamsss)

During a presentation to her author network, Sylvia Hubbard said, “Don’t fear yourself out of starting.” I won’t overthink how people will react. I won’t get bogged down by analytics and other’s success. I’ll just keep posting. Keep chugging along. If you see me in these Internet streets say “hello”. If you see your friends on these Internet streets trying to make something happen, give them the positive engagement they need.

Stats wise, my channel’s growth is stagnant. Any new uploads were scheduled weeks in advance.

Thank you for watching.
