Tom Goes to the Mayor - chicago animation short film web series

Nonprofitable cost $100K and no one watched—Onicia Update

Have you ever heard of a cartoon called Tom Goes to the Mayor? I hadn’t until Devin (DevinWhitlock.com) brought it to my attention.

Tom Goes to the Mayor was a very weird ten-minute cartoon on Adult Swim that aired at midnight. You need to know that at $100,000 a pop—yes, $100K per 10-minute episode— it was the cheapest animated show on that network.

Devin and I can hardly believe it cost that much and was still the cheapest. Here’s one of the less annoying clips that Devin found.

One hundred. Thousand. Dollars.

Devin: “And you did *so much more* with PowerPoint and a dream! Anyway, take all this as a huge shot in the arm. You’re amazing and talented!”

Onicia: 🙏 Something… something… mediocre white man.

Yes, the talent is probably the biggest cost as they likely called in every celebrity friend to do voice-over work. As hosts of Scams, Swindles, and Schemes we absolutely respect the swindle. Still, $100K is an eye-popping amount for the final product

Nonprofitable took 300 hours to animate, 4 years of labor (there were some stops and starts), 10 volunteers (including our very supportive spouses), and a few thousands dollars. Yes, we spent about $2K of our money on software, subscriptions, and the premiere.

Big questions:

  • Should Devin and I be ashamed and delete Nonprofitable?
  • Should I continue to develop this skill and animate something else

Romcom Table Read Update

I’m still casting for all roles for Rest in Piss, Devin Damuels. This week, I’d like you to focus on helping me find my MYRON. The audition deadline is Friday, January 31, 2025. Know someone who fits the role? Send them the casting call link https://www.oniciam20.sg-host.com/RIPDD-scripts.

MYRON (supporting/30s/male/Black)

Everything about him is so average. He feels very much like a small-town gym teacher past their prime. a novice at negging. He’s a worm of man and only a self-hating, virginal Christian woman, who is pushing 33 (gasp!) and desperate to fulfill her godly calling to be a tradwife would give him a second look. Myron is a man completely lost in manosphere, red pill rhetoric.

Presently, I can only afford to pay $150 per actor for participating in the table read. I really want to pay my actors according to SAG-AFTRA’s Ultra-Low Budget ($241/actor/day) or even up to the full Theatrical Day Wage ($1,204/actor/day). That’s why I’ve applied to the following grants:

  • Cultuurfonds Caribisch Gebied (CCG) – General Fund (rejected)
  • Cultuurfonds Caribisch Gebied (CCG) – Alex Alberto Film Fonds (rejected, TWICE)
  • ScreenCraft – Film Fund Grant Program (pending)
  • Anarchist United Foundation – Writers Discovery Fellowship Program (pending)

I have a list of 11 other grants I will be applying to this year. Many of the deadlines are after April 2025. Please forward any links to grants, accelerators, paid fellowships, or anything to help me fund this venture.

Referring me for work via ClearMango.com is helpful. I’d love to work with romance and children’s authors. For children’s authors, I can use my animation skills and transform their story into an imaginative animation. For romance authors, I can use my audio editing skills to produce their audio book or a steamy dramatized teaser. YAY! FUN!!

YouTube Monetization Journey Update

For a YouTube channel to be monetized, I need 500 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours. The table below shows a summary of my progress.

Friends, the last days of December felt like one long weekend. I almost forgot to upload a new video to YouTube. I feared that no shameless promotion would mean that my YouTube gains would not be significant. Wow, 2 new subbies and almost 5 additional watch hours!! My geriatric Millennial heart might need a pacemaker  ❤

New on YouTube

Speaking of medical issues, my latest on YouTube is a short film about the struggles of signing up for medical insurance in America.

Did y’all watch Meet Me Next Christmas on Netflix? Yes, Christmas is over BUT it’s still cold out somewhere—grab a blanket or a fan and get cozy!

Feminist Creatives Society

To know me is to know I love an accountability group. That’s why I joined Rebellious Magazine’s Feminist Creatives Society. You should join in 2025 because your art isn’t gonna create itself.

Carry On Friends podcast turns 10!

Carry on Friends | podcast merch | kerry-ann reid-brown

Get your headphones ready, more Caribbean American experiences are coming you way! The first episode of the podcast was launched on January 13, 2015. Celebrate this Caribbean cultural institute and keeper of we stories by buying merch. I recently purchased my 2nd Carry On Friends journal. The merch quality is so good you can’t tell which journal is over 6 years old and which is barely 2 weeks old.
