Hey Friends,
I’m taking a break from querying my movie. Honestly, I don’t know if I have enough hustle in me to get it made. I’m a nobody in Chicago with like 2-hours a day to make magic happen.
Could I ever write a proposal good enough to earn a grant to produce a proof of concept short?
Would the short be good enough to inspire a producer to buy the rights?
Let say the script gets sold (long shot) it’s then another up-hill journey to get it made.

Thanks for your kind responses to my newsletter, The Should Monster. I was reminded that people did in fact watch Nonprofitable. We had an in-person premiere. We heard our friends laugh at our silly jokes. The babies fell in love with Brenda’s cat

I was also reminded that only scummy capitalists pursue ventures solely for their profitability. I should make art because it brings me joy and because it means something to me.
So, I got to work trying to make fetch happen.
Boy, I don’t know if I’m rusty or uninspire,d but I this is really all I’ve been able to illustrate –haven’t even gotten around to animating.

Can you tell what it is?
Girl, I’m trying to draw a market place. This is supposed to be a rock wall with a concrete sign that reads ‘Welcome to Simpsonbay Market’.
I want to animate Kalani the Fisherman, the Caribbean folklore I wrote for Forsee Foundation, but it’s like pulling teeth.
I’m intimidated by the fact that the story is like 17 minutes long. That’s as long as the first season of Nonprofitable, which took about 300 hours to animate.
I’m intimidated because I’m starting from scratch. No existing assets. No team. Nothing.
I’m afraid because some “cool kids” were reviewing animation in a web series made by a professional production company and totally said mean things. Or rather, I read them as mean because I liked the animation but they totally dragged it. If they hate that, then what I did for Nonprofitable would be bigger dogshit.
I want to create things that will teach my kids about their Caribbean heritage. And it’s a lovely story named after my nephew.
Sadly, Foresee Foundation changed the ending to something nonsensical. I hate it so much. There’s a whole scene where the boat is caught in a storm. I don’t know how to animate that!
The entire project feels so big and I really don’t like the new ending. So why bother?
There are about 37 of these Caribbean folklores. They are so good. So much love was put into the audio production and writing. I know more kids would tune in if there were visuals.
I feel like I can do this, but also, I’m just a girl.
Foresee was interested in having me animate but they didn’t have any funds. Bills gotta get paid, so I got a day job and focused on preparing for my table read.
Okay, so can I get lightning to strike twice and animate something new?
I really don’t want to jump into another writing project because I feel like ninjas don’t read. Unless it’s a novel, anything written feels incomplete.
If you were me, how would you spend your days?
As yourself, how are you spending your days?
